Yin Yoga

    Let go and receive!

Slow down, stand still and take the time to feel. Experience development without effort. You come into your oasis moment through surrender.

Yin Yoga is a quiet class where you stay in a pose for a longer period of time.  By holding a posture for a long time, you address the connective tissue in your body. Everything in the body has a layer of connective tissue. Connective tissue supports, connects, protects organs and gives your body structure.

By stretching the muscles with the Yin technique, tensions and stress are released. In this way you not only create space in your body, but also in your head and your  heart.

The founder of Yin yoga is the American Paul Grilley, who has been teaching yoga and anatomy since 1980. He bases his Yin theory on the researches and writings of Hiroshi Motoyama, a Tokyo yogi and scientist with extensive knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine. Where in most sports you actively use muscle by tightening and relaxing tension, Yin yoga is about letting go of as many muscles as possible. You focus on the connective tissue and weights in the area where you feel the stretch. In his book  Yin Yoga: Outline of a quiet practice  Grilley explains the difference: 'The connective tissue and the joints are yin, because they are stiff and inelastic. The muscles are yang: elastic and soft.'

In Yin Yoga we don't use the body to get into a pose, but we use the body to get into the pose. Yin yoga is a relatively quiet class. It appeals to many participants because you don't have to move very intensively, but can take the time for your body.

The concepts of yin and yang can be applied to everything. Yang stands for the extroverted, the changeable and mobile. Yin represents the introverted, stable and immobile. Thus earth and the dark are yin, and air and light are yang.  For example, Ashtanga Yoga is Yang and technically often focuses on the strength of the muscles. "It's not muscle strength that makes us fit," says Grilley. 'It is about the flexibility of the joints and connective tissue.

A combination of Yin and Ashtanga yoga is royal and well-matched. Get and stay strong with Ashtanga, stay physically flexible  with Yin. Orphan  point and watch athletes. They end their career not because of lack of muscles, but because of problems with their joints.

Yin yoga is the way to restore connective tissue and joints and keep them optimal.
